What’s it all about?
Mudman is an off-road multi-sport event with running, swimming or canoeing, and cycling events, held in scenic surroundings in a spirit of fun amidst the competition. The very first Mudman in KZN was held at Hermannsburg in 1999. It has grown into a whole-family event, catering for everyone from under 5 to 50+
The Hermannsburg Mudman has always been organised and run by the staff, parents and learners of the school. As such, it acts as a function that brings these groups together in a mutual enterprise, building school spirit and raising funds for the school. In recent years, two other schools copied the idea, bringing in professional sports organisers to run their events purely as fundraisers. In 2004 the three schools agreed to work together and transform the three separate Mudman competitions into a series. In 2006 a fourth school joined the series. Each Mudman has its own flavour, but the same main events will run throughout the series. Special thanks go to aQuellé, stalwart sponsors of three of the Mudman events and of the series as a whole.
Individual competitors in the Hermannsburg Mudman over the years have included Rebecca van der Linde, Springbok athlete Russell Kennedy, Ocean Warrior Matt Bowmen, Olympic silver medallist Terrence Parkin, Roan Exelby, Alan Martin, Carol Rolando, Jean-Paul van der Linde, Terence Mitchell, Alida Schutte, Anton Storm, Lee Gumming, Ken Curr and Suzette Botha.
School teams have always been most welcome at Mudman, and in the past Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, Thomas More College, Greytown High School and Greytown Junior School have been winners of the schools’ challenge.
The following quotation identifies the series approach to Mudman:
"aQuellé country plays host to the four-race aQuellé Mudman Series in February, March and April each year. This exciting series includes a 750m swim or 4km paddle, a 20km mountain bike ride and a 5km trail run through beautiful countryside.
"Athletes can compete as individuals or in teams of three. The series is primarily aimed as a fundraiser for the hosting schools: Hermannsburg, Cordwalles, Epworth and Durban Preparatory. Both junior and senior schools, as well as corporates, are encouraged to take up the challenge of taming the aQuellé Mudman.
"With great prizes up for grabs and a mudskipper event for the kiddies, this series promises to be a great day out for the whole family."

An "event" consists of a swim/paddle, cycle and run for a particular age group. An event can be completed by an individual or by a team (eg where one person swims/paddles, another cycles and a third runs). Teams of two or four competitors can be entered, but are not eligible for prizes (eg if two people paddle a K2, a third cycles and a fourth runs). Events are offered in either full or half-distance. Prizes are differentiated for male and female competitors. Unique to Hermannsburg is the Corporate Challenge, a corporate half-distance challenge extended to all companies or corporate bodies entering as teams for the event. A full-distance event involves:
- 700 m dam swim or 2,5 km dam paddle (K1 or K2)
- 20 km mountain bike ride
- 5 km off-road run
Spur Mudskipper Adventure
An event for the kiddies in various age groups ranging from pre-school to under-12. While these younger competitors can also participate in the Mudman events (accompanied all the way by a parent), Mudskippers is specifically for the younger set. As for Mudman, it comprises a swim, cycle and run, but in a swimming pool instead of the dam and over much shorter distances.
